In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day coming up in a couple weeks, check out this book recommended by our English teacher, Mrs. Macias!
Everyone has heard of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, but have you heard of Claudette Colvin? Claudette was the first teenager to refuse to give her seat to a white woman on the bus during Jim Crow laws. Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice by Phillip Hoose is the story of a courageous 15 year old who stood up for justice while many adults were afraid to do so. Most of us know of the adults who lead the way during the Civil Rights Movement, but this book talks about key figures who made a difference as teenagers. Jeremiah Reeves, Emmett Till, Mary Louise Smith, Aurelia S. Browder, and Susie McDonald are just some of the young people you will read about in this book. As you read, you will encounter pictures in almost every page depicting racist signs used during Jim Crow, excerpts from newspapers of the time, mug shots of Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and other Civil Rights leaders, and even a copy of Claudette’s fingerprint record from her arrest. The best part of Claudette’s story is that she is still alive today, and she continues to visit schools to share her story. Pick up this award-winning novel, and immerse yourself in the story of how a timid, but brave teenager changed history.
Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice is available in the library (Call Number: 323.09 HOO) or as an eBook on OverDrive. For information on how to check out books on OverDrive, click here.

It's very simple...stop by the library and recommend a really awesome book (just fill out the form located just outside the library doors). It can be any book you've personally enjoyed...a book you read recently...a book you've read over and over...whatever you would tell your classmates, "YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK!"
The drawing for the winner will be May 15th during Lunch.
This month's read is We Should Hang Out Sometime by Josh Sundquist. Josh is a well-known motivational speaker who often talks about his life as an amputee and Paralympic skier. But in this book, he talks about dating!
If you've ever had a date go horribly wrong or wondered why you can't get a date, this is the book for you! This is a hilarious memoir about how we often get in our own way when it comes to romance. At the age of 25, Josh Sundquist realized he had never had a girlfriend. So he decides to track down his former "flames" to find out what went wrong. What follows are laugh-out-loud moments and awkward situations that anyone can relate to. While this is nonfiction, it reads like any contemporary romance. If you like John Green, you'll like this book. Josh also has a very funny channel on YouTube that you should check out.
